This is a writing activity that contains 17 flawed statements written by students. The directions are to "Rewrite each of the following statements, eliminating the casual, informal, unsophisticated style." This is a challenging activity that forces students to think critically about how to best revise each example. They quickly see that the examples do not make much sense, and at first, fixing them can seem almost impossible without knowing the author's intent. Often, the answer is to simplify and clarify by first eliminating unnecessary words. They are surprised by how much they can clean up and improve these messes with a little bit of thought and effort.
I have had students work individually or in pairs. This exercises their brains and helps them see what is necessary during the revision process--what they should pay attention to when they write their own papers.
