Learning Objective

Students will practice their addition and subtraction math facts through hands on activities and mental math games.

6 active, hands on, beach themed math games get students up and moving while practicing their addition and subtraction facts. The games come with options to practice math facts within 10 or within 20 so you can customize them to fit the needs of your students. You can have the whole class play the games at the same time or set them up as centers. Teacher pages include materials needed, set up options, and game play instructions. There are black and white versions of all pages as well.

What's Included: 6 beach themed math games that cover addition and subtraction facts within 10 and within 20. You can pick whichever levels work for the level of your students. The page numbers for each activity are listed in parenthesis. The first set is for colored pages and the second is for the black and white versions.

~Beach Ball Toss: Addition or subtraction within 10 or within 20 (p.4-5, 92-93)

~Coconut Bowling: Students use coconuts to knock down palm trees to work on subtracting within 10 or adding 3 single digit numbers (p.6-11, 94-99)

~Shark Swat!: Students race to swat the shark with the correct answer as you call out equations to work on addition or subtraction within 10 or within 20 (p. 12-16, 100-104)

~Sandcastle Smash!: Students build sandcastles and smash them to model subtraction within 10 or within 20 on a ten frame (p.17-28, 105-116)

~Shell Collector: Students race relay style to collect all the shells and put them into the bucket that's labeled with the correct answer. 2 levels of addition and 2 levels of subtraction (p.29-51, 117-139)

~Surf’s Up: When you pause the beachy music students jump on a surfboard and answer their fact quickly to work on +1/2 or -1/2 fluency within 10 or within 20 (p.52-91, 140-179)

Materials: In addition to this product you will need some beach balls, bowling pins or empty drink bottles, a few small dodgeballs or something similar, pool noodles or fly swatters, dough or clay, and some beachy tunes! Optional: Buckets and shovels. Most of these things can be borrowed from friends or the PE teacher, or bought at a dollar store.

Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 5.
