Looking for that certain something to SPICE up your reading strategy instruction in the classroom? Well look no further! The Critter Cafe can be used as a yearlong teaching tool in your primary classroom. There are 44 strategy posters in all, targeting the common core domains of Reading Literature, Reading Informational Texts, Reading Foundational Skills and Language. Each strategy poster is sited with the Common Core State Standard. There are 13 Comprehension posters, 12 Decoding posters, 7 Building Vocabulary posters, 8 Fluency posters, and I have also included The Fab 4 posters.
The inspiration of this unit stems from my interest in using Reciprocal Teaching methods in the classroom. Whether your reading block includes Reader's Workshop, Basal programs, or other literacy frameworks and menus, The Critter Cafe works as a "common ground" to connect strategy learning with focus target objectives that we want our students to be accountable for learning throughout the year.
I have included 12 blank monthly planning calendars to help you schedule and plan for your critter strategy introductions throughout the year. Many school districts are mapping out CCSS, so feel free to plan your strategy instruction based on how your current reading framework is set up. Each strategy poster is 8 1/2 by 11 but can easily be reduced to half size to fit your needs. Reduce the size down to 45% and you now have flash cards or bookmarks for more teaching options! I suggest using the highest print quality on your printer.
This unit is not editable. Please feel free to email me with any questions BEFORE making your purchase. (Beanie Babies not included.)
I would be honored to have you follow my teaching blog, firstgradecrittercafe.blogspot.com for more teaching tips and ideas on how to use the Critter Cafe in your classroom!
Thank you so much!
As of 8-1-14, an additional editable powerpoint is included. Perhaps your beanies look just a bit different? Now you can Upload and insert photos of your beanies onto the posters that you need!
Update Oct. 2014
I have added the second series of Strategy Posters using Real-Life Images to each poster. This is definitely a FUN, NEW way to create a target based, print-rich classroom where the focus is always on being a strategic reader!
