This is a mini-theme based on the literature selection “Bear Snores On”.

The unit consists of:
A color and black and white emergent reader, which is a simple retelling of the literature selection “Bear Snores On”. The black and white version includes an interactive component where the students cut and paste the correct picture that corresponds to the text. This allows me assess their skills in understanding beginning letter sounds.
➢ Students roll a die and move their game player around the game board provided. They must print the initial letter that represents the sound of the picture displayed on the game board. A dotted printing sheet is also provided.
➢ Included are alphabet picture cards.
➢ “Spin A Rhyme” in this game partner players take a turn spinning a top and they must find a rhyming picture match to the picture they landed on.
➢ Playing partners take a turn rolling a die and moving their game players accordingly. The partners must name the letter they landed on and print this letter on the dotted printing sheet provided.
➢ The teacher would print the focus sight word on the game board provided. Again, the students would roll a die, move their game player accordingly and say the sight word they landed on.
Students print the correct numeral that represents the ten-frame picture found on the worksheets (numbers to 20).
A follow-up craft activity and templates is included.
Also included are templates to make stick puppets to retell the story
This theme is meant to be used for a two week time period and is based on a balanced literacy philosophy.
