Bear Stays Up for Christmas, by Karma Wilson, is the perfect core book for a holiday unit! It is a great story to build comprehension skills with your kindergarten through second grade students.
In this story, Bear struggles to stay up for his friends, who are determined to keep him awake for Christmas. Full of sharing and gift giving (and a surprise visit from Santa), Bear and his friends celebrate the holidays in the best way possible — together!
I’ve provided several activities for you to choose from:
(color and black and white): Use these 12 cards in groups or as a center activity in which students sequence the events of the story. The color cards are in order, and the black and white cards are out of order.
Story Telling Set
(color and black and white): Use this set of 16 figures to retell the story. After students retell it enough detail that they demonstrate familiarity with the text, have them write a reader’s theater script, and then use the figures on craft sticks to act it out.
Story Elements Printable
: Have student write or draw the key story elements, including characters, setting, beginning, middle, ending, problem, and solution.
Reader’s Response Writing Pages #1
Have students respond to the story by writing about a time they gave a gift to someone
Reader’s Response Writing Pages #2
Have students respond to the story by writing about a time they had a hard time staying awake for something exciting.
Please note: the picture book is not included with this resource.
