An introduction to the Beat Poets and the movement of beat poetry. Brief biographies of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, William S. Burrough, Herbert Huncke and Lucien Carr. Explanation/ visuals of the scandalous murder, the City Lights Bookstore and famous trial (First Amendment). I begin and end the PowerPoint with contemporary examples of slam poetry performances (embedded videos) to show how Beat Poetry is still so alive today, in its evolved form, and so that students can see the way it has transformed poetry into such a visceral performance experience. Also explained, of course, is how Bob Dylan fits into the Beat Generation.
After this unit, I give a unit test on Imagism, the Confessional Poetry movement and the Beats. Students also choose to write a poem in the style of one of these three movements of poetry that we study. All accompanying materials and keys/rubrics available.
