Beat the Teach is a math game designed to practice math fact families (addition and multiplication) and to use problem solving strategies and mental math to win the game. Procedures as well as detailed instructions are given for each game, and six separate game boards are included. Three game boards are specifically designed for addition, and the other three are for multiplication. Both games require materials found in most classrooms – a game board (provided), an Elmo or any Interactive Document Camera to project the game board onto a screen and two paperclips. (Optional - a transparency, an overhead projector, an overhead pen)
The class is divided into two teams which compete with each other as well as the teacher. The focus is on individual play as well as team work, and critical thinking as well as problem solving are necessary components of the game. The first team (or teacher) that gets four in a row wins the game. After the students understand how to play the game, it can be used at a math center.
My students were very partial to this game, and the highlight of their day was when I, their teacher, lost! So when you hear your students groaning about practicing math facts, just say, “Let’s play Beat the Teach”.
