In my classroom I have found that
one of the best math skills that students can
have is to know their times tables quickly and by
memory. At the beginning of the year I gave each of my
students a multiplication bookmark located on the next page and
every night for homework the students have to write their times tables from 1 to 12 on a piece of notebook paper. It is amazing how quickly the students start memorizing them! Once all of the students start memorizing them I pull out my “Beat the teacher” game. Any student who feels like they know their times tables can try at the beginning of each month to beat me at this game and the reward is not having to copy their multiplication tables for homework each night for that month. The students must continue to beat me for every month that they want to remain homework free. Since this can be time consuming I only do it once at the beginning of each month.
• Print the cards 2 sided on cardstock and then laminate them for longer use.
• Have another student hold the cards up for you and the student attempting to beat you and then whoever gets the answer first gets to keep the card. (I wait 3 seconds before answering to give them time to think).
• Once all of the cards are gone, whoever has the most card in
front of them wins.
You can also use this set as flashcards, a math center, a game where students try to beat each other or as an RTI strategy. If you enjoyed this product please leave me positive feedback on TPT.
