The following eight-page study guide film packet is used to accompany the Jean Cocteau-directed 1946 French romantic fantasy film, La Belle et la Bête in French or Beauty and the Beast in English. This study guide, which is in English, can be used in an English or film studies classroom. The first page contains a list of cast and crew and a background and introduction on the film. The second page is a page that allows viewers to jot and take down their own notes. Pages three, four, five, and six contain comprehension questions to guide the viewer on the work's camera movement, cinematography, (internal and external) conflict, costume design, editing, plot, set design, story, style, symbolism, and themes. The seventh page contains discussion questions on the work's acting, allusions to Roman mythology, characterization, critical reception, resolution, sound, and themes. The eighth and final page asks students to read the original fairy tale and compare Cocteau's film adaptation to the original as well as to the Disney animated 1991 film adaptation to compare and contrast filmmakers' different choices in style, subject matter, and themes.
