READY TO USE LESSON
This lesson challenges students to evaluate Dickinson's use of diction to establish the tone of her poem "Because I Could Not Stop for Death." This text is a CCLS recommended text, and the questions are aligned to Common Core Standards. I have found this lesson to be very effective, as I've used it many times in my 11th grade classroom.
The lesson, which can be used as is by teachers or modified to fit their purposes, consists of an Aim, Do Now, Preview of Pertinent Vocabulary, a Reading Period, a Work Period consisting of rigorous, higher-order, text-dependent questions, an Exit Question, and a Homework assignment-- all of which are aligned to the lesson's Aim.
It also contains a copy of the poem, with footnotes provided containing definitions of rigorous vocabulary words, in order to provide a scaffold to help all learners access the text.
