    Description

This novel study includes five resources that will simplify your life when teaching Because of Winn-Dixie.

    ***

    13 Quizzes Description:

Get a quick assessment of your students' comprehension as they read through the book with these 13 quizzes.

Each quiz contains four multiple-choice, higher-order-thinking questions over two chapters. The questions assess many CCSS-ELA standards, including vocabulary, cause and effect, main idea, summarizing, character analysis, sequence of events, story details, comparing and contrasting, and much more.

Questions and answers are written in a way similar to what students may see on a standardized test, while not being too confusing.

An answer key is provided for the quizzes.

Each quiz is also available in a Google Form so you can assign them digitally if you'd like. You must have a Google Classroom account to do so. Otherwise, you can just print from the PDF. When you open the PDF for the quizzes, go to page 15 for links to access these Google Forms.

    ***

    18 Journal Prompts Description:

This file contains 18 journal prompts for students while reading Because of Winn-Dixie. Each prompt states what chapter it should be given after to optimize student reflection for that particular section of the book. These are wonderful ways to spark student discussion, check for comprehension, and push students to think deeper about the story's events. Meets expectations for several CCSS ELA standards, including CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.5.10.

No answer key is provided for the journal prompts, as they are all open-ended questions.

Each journal prompt is also available in a Google Form so you can assign them digitally if you'd like. You must have a Google Classroom account to do so. Otherwise, you can just print from the PDF. When you open the PDF file for the journal prompts, go to pages 21-22 for links to access these Google Forms.

    Digging Deeper:

Plot Analysis, Character Study, and Character Interaction pages to help your students dig a little bit deeper. No answer key is provided for the digging deeper resources.

    ***

    Vocabulary Activities

Use this interactive vocabulary activity to help your students understand, and be able to use, key vocabulary from Because of Winn-Dixie. Students will cut out vocabulary words and glue them in their notebook for every three to four chapters. Then they will attach the correct definition and sentence with each word. This is a very helpful, interactive way for students to practice the vocabulary, too. Directions and answer key are included.

    ***

    Cloze Activities

This file contains a cloze reading activity for every two chapters of Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. Each page contains a summary of the chapters, with missing words for students to fill in. Students select the missing words from a word bank at the bottom of each page. An answer key is included.

To make it more challenging, you can cut off the word bank before you make copies.
