This teaching unit is designed to accompany Kate DiCamillo's novel Because of Winn-Dixie. It includes handouts, activities and/or questions as well as chapter tests, a unit test, writing assignments, postreading activities, and more. Our lessons are based on language arts standards, so you will not find just plain generic activities for this novel. Furthermore, this unit will help you address Common Core standards. For example, the lesson on chapter 15 prompts students to not only find similes, but it also requires them to analyze the similes and to explain how the similes impact imagery. These handouts are ready for you to use for each chapter. With this packet, no prep is needed! All of the work is planned out for you! Use these handouts to teach the novel as a whole-class read, for homework, for group work in literature circles, or as independent classwork.
**New*** We just recently added reading signposts handouts to accompany this novel. Based on the book Notice and Note by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst, these handouts and charts will help your students become better readers! You can use these handouts with this story and with every novel and story you teach!
This is a game changer for the way you teach close reading. Included as a separate file from the novel unit, you will download handouts that explain the six "signposts" of reading. Handouts are also included for you to find the signposts in "Because of Winn-Dixie". Answer keys are included in the teacher packet. We guarantee you're going to LOVE this, and you will be able to use these handouts with every other story and novel you read all year!
