Lots of children learn with fun hands-on learning exercises. Sometimes hands-on learners need you, as the instructor, to think outside of the box to make learning fun. I am sure that you as the teacher have learned over the years that the end goal of reading comprehension does not always require a worksheet or test. I also find that hands-on learning is even better when you get down and dirty and there is no better way than with dough exercises! These fun dough mats are sure to be a different, yet fun way to reinforce their reading comprehension skills of the story Because of Winn-Dixie. Whether you use them sporadically throughout the story, or after every reading, they can be the perfect addition to your lessons!
To use these fun reading comprehension dough mats simply print out the pages on cardstock and then laminate them. After each reading I plan to pull one of the characters discussed and have my daughter use Play-Doh to design a scene around that character. Then, as my student is building their scene I can ask them some key reading comprehension questions. I have found that in doing their reading comprehension in this manner they do not clam up or become a bundle of nerves as they feel the spotlight is on them to answer correctly. Once the scene is built around the character the student can then describe what is happening in the scene they created to express their understanding of the story.
These Because of Winn-Dixie Dough Mats are very user friendly. They are even as easy to use as 1-2-3-4…
1…Grab your Because of Winn-Dixie Dough Mats
2…Read your daily portion of the story (either as a read-a-loud or independently)
3… Have your child or student grab their favorite dough colors to create a scene for that character using their memory of what was just read.
4…Have your child or student explain their scene to you.
