I created this product as a companion to “The Third Wheel” R. Davies’s trifold novel study. I am a reading specialist and am always looking for ways to assist my struggling readers. I love The Third Wheel trifold novel studies, but I needed to prepare each of my students with a mini-lesson to review the skill for each chapter in the trifold. Therefore, I decided to make these reading skill mini-lessons for my students to glue into their interactive notebooks. They also include a “Word of the Day” page which has the students familiarize themselves with the chapter vocabulary words. I have found that this short review of the reading skill drastically helps my students answer the novel study questions, and keeps them focused on that skill while reading the chapter. Below is an outline of how I use these mini-lessons in conjunction with the novel study.
At the beginning of the novel, we set up a section in our interactive notebooks for our novel study. We begin by gluing in the Vocabulary Flipbook from “The Third Wheel”. This first flipbook usually contains a vocabulary word for each of the first 5 chapters.
Next, we glue in the “Chapter Skill” and “Word of the Day” pages from this product that I created. I go over the skill with the students using the mini skill page.
Then, we read the chapter together. I tell students to listen for when the vocabulary (word of the day) is mentioned and jot down the page number. After reading, we go back to the page the vocabulary word was found on and use context clues to determine a definition. We then complete the “Word of the Day” page and write the definition in the Vocabulary Flipbook.
Last, I have students answer the chapter question in the trifold novel study. We then review and share our answers as a class.
I hope you enjoy this product!
