Are you searching for meaningful learning opportunities to use during your guided reading block? Within this packet are 3 separate book studies to be used with: a short chapter book, a non-fiction book and a just-right reading level book. These book studies are designed to be completed by partnerships. Because this has not been designed around a particular set of books, this packet is easily differentiated to meet the needs of your readers.
Each book study consists of a letter to introduce the purpose and goals to the students, printables that can combined into a packet for each student and opinion writing options. At the end of this packet, there are a few extra activities that I included that can be used separately or in addition to the Reading Detective activities.
Skills included in this packet:
story elements - character, setting, problem, solution
author's purpose - lessons to be learned
main idea and supporting details
non-fiction text features
identifying unknown or tricky words
identifying word patterns
identifying high frequency words
While working through each book study, each set of partners will also be practicing important social skills such as cooperation and compromise. A bonus to this unit, that I discovered as my kids took part in it - it helps students work on those speaking and listening standards found in Common Core.
