To set up your child’s chart:
1st - Print the card sheets or individual cards (card stock will make it more durable).
2nd - Use a glue stick to attach the fronts and backs of the cards.
3rd - Cut out the individual cards. Laminate if you want more durability.
4th - Select the cards you want to represent your child’s bedtime routine. Place the cards from left to right if in one single row and top to bottom if more rows.
When your child completes an activity in the bedtime routine, the card is flipped over (preferably by the child) to show that it is completed. This gives the child ownership of the bedtime process. You could think of it as an age appropriate "checklist" of all the cool down activities associated with bedtime.
We suggest keeping your child’s bedtime routine as consistent as possible (including the time of night you begin the routine) in order to help your child unwind. Give your child a warning before starting the routine so s/he can anticipate the conclusion of the current activity. Repetition lets children know what to expect, which makes them feel more secure, promoting sound sleep throughout the night. It also provides children with the opportunity to develop skills to self soothe. However, the chart is design to be able to easily switch the cards if you need an altered schedule or a condensed/extended bedtime some nights. With a switch, it is important to explain the schedule change to your child.
This bedtime routine chart is designed to help you create a relaxing, enjoyable time for you and your child. Your child can receive 1,2, or 3 stars each morning reflecting how well they did the night before. We have included 2 charts for use if you wish to record how many stars your child has earned. These charts can be traded in for rewards (screen time, date with mom or dad, ice cream….) or simply to instill a sense of accomplishment. Hope you find this chart as helpful as our little ones do. :)
