Teaching Social Studies and Science to newcomer and beginner English Language Learners is always a struggle. There aren't a lot of materials that accessible to them, and they frequently have even less background knowledge than the rest of the class. To get around that, I started writing pattern books on the topics we were studying. These pattern books serve the same dual purpose that the grade level texts do in advancing literacy while learning content. This book is most appropriate for reading levels A through E.
This book teaches about the Eastern Woodland Indians, which are a part of the New York State 4th Grade Social Studies Curriculum. It prints out on letter paper, which should be cut in half to assemble the book. I printed and laminated one copy to teach as a shared reading with my students. It could also be used as a guided reading book or for independent reading, depending on the levels of your students.
