This is an activity that can last the entire school year and will teach students how to write checks and carry a balance. Each student is given "checks" to cut out and color along with a balance book donated by a bank. Each week, students are paid 0 - 10 dollars for doing their classroom duty, handing in all the assignments, good behavior, etc. The students are then responsible for keeping track of their money (teacher has a master sheet of individual balances). They can write a check to the teacher for various things including, but not limited to: free pass on homework, answer to a test question, lunch with the teacher and a friend, exercise ball to substitute a chair, etc. The class together can chip in a paycheck from each student to purchase things like: a movie day, learning on the ground with pillows/blankets, learning outside, class field trip, extra recess, etc. The prices for items can vary depending on what seems like an appropriate cost. The students in my class really like this and it's been very helpful in practicing simple math skills and starting to build financial skills.
