This set includes:
20 pages of 12-16 pictures for each consonant. The letter Cc includes 2 sheets: one sheet for the /k/ sound and one sheet for the /s/ sound.
All pictures represent the sound at the beginning of words except the letter ‘x’.
This is because we teach students that x says /ks/, but there are no words that start with ‘X’ and make the /ks/ sound. The picture cards for ‘X’ are words that end with ‘X’ and make the /ks/ sound.
I have made an effort to include pictures that go along with the isolated consonant sounds only. None of the pictures/ words start with blends. It is my belief that effective phonics instruction teaches blends separately from beginning sounds.
Also included are lists of the vocabulary words used with the pictures. This list represents pictures of objects/ actions students may be familiar with along with words that may be new to students. This is to help build vocabulary as well as emphasis the beginning consonant sounds.
How to use this set:
These pictures are appropriate for whole group, small group, and learning centers.
The pictures are approximately 2” x 2” in size. They should fit into most pocket charts.
Students can use 2-4 sets and sort pictures by beginning sound. Use the letter heading from each sheet to cut out and create headings for the sorting mat.
The vocabulary lists can be cut apart and students can match words to pictures.
Students can also use pictures and words to aid in writing/ spelling activities.
