It is a bright summer day and perfect barbecuing weather. You have invited all of your friends to come over and enjoy some extra special grilled treats. As you get ready to fire up the grill and rock your super barbecuing skills, you notice you are missing all the essential ingredients. Now you must dash to the store and pick up the necessary ingredients to keep your title as King of the Grill.
Students must start in their backyard and make their way to their title as King of the Grill by rolling the dice. On each space the players land, they must collect a Barbecue Day card and solve the division or multiplication problem. If they are able to solve the problem correctly, they may collect an ingredient of their choice on their Barbecue Essential card. If a player lands on a space with a fire, they must move back 1 space because they have burnt their burger on the grill. The player to make it to the end with the most ingredients wins the title King of the Grill. In this Smarten-Up file folder game, students will have simple multiplication and division problems they can solve with the aid of drawings or manipulatives (i.e. counting bears/ unifix cubes). Students will develop a deeper understanding of the difference between division and multiplication.
Have students draw pictures to help them solve the problems. This will add in comprehension of division versus multiplication.
* Print extra BBQ essential cards depending on the number of players!
