If you are ready to begin a unit on narrative writing, you might want to take a look at this activity first.
In this zip file, you will find materials for a lesson on how to begin a narrative. I have written the story of “The Three Little Pigs” five different ways and have provided a word bank so that students can match the technique with the story beginning. All five beginnings are on slides so that you can display them and read them together. Along with the deck of slides, I have included a complementary worksheet so that students can read along and assign the technique to each beginning of the story. You can find an answer key on the last slide, so be sure not to display it by mistake before you complete the activity.
NOTE: After we do this activity, I ask students to choose a story that they know really well. It can be a fairy tale, a nursery rhyme, a short story, a novel, et cetera. Then they have to write the beginning three different ways. I used to have students pick the name of a fairy tale out of a hat, but that was huge mistake since my students did not know many fairy tales.
