Scales are an incredibly important part of any musicians proper training, so why not start off right from the very beginning? These simple 5-note (pentatonic) scale exercises will engage your beginning band students in several different keys and compounding rhythms. The scale is presented first in half-notes, going up and down, then in quarter notes, then with two 8th notes per pitch. After that, students will complete the whole scale in single 8th notes, and then move on to four 16th notes per pitch. Finally, they ascend and descend the scale with two 16th notes per pitch.
You can take these at whatever pace you want with your students, whatever is most appropriate for their skill level. Maybe spend a week or two on one scale before moving on to a new key. It's up to you!
I hope you find them as useful as I have in the years since I wrote them out for my own students!
