Your students will enjoy this Beginning sound sort. Students will practice their phonemic awareness skills by listening to words for the first sound. They will also practice writing each letter of the alphabet. One letter is represented on each worksheet. The Phonemic awareness activity is identifying pictures that begin with the corresponding first sound of each letter. All vowels have pictures that present the short sound of the vowel. All consonants are the first or most common sound. The only exception is X. For all of the pictures of X 'ks', the x is in the last sound of the word. This makes a great center activity after students become proficient in identifying the first sounds of words.
