This is a nice little phonological awareness activity for 3-4 students in pre-k to first grade. This activity involves memory and phoneme isolation. You place out picture cards facing down. Students are asked to flip two cards over at a time. They say the initial sound and if both cards have the same initial sound then the student gets to keep the pair. If the card sounds do not match then the next student goes. Students should be paying attention to the cards flipped over trying to find match pairs.
You can make this game a phonemic awareness activity by using the picture and letter cards instead. Students need to isolate the beginning phoneme and match it to its corresponding letter.
