I use these circle maps to introduce beginning sounds, practice beginning sounds, and check for understanding of beginning sounds. These circle maps come with pictures for students to choose which pictures begin with the sound that they are studying.
Extension activities: Have early finishers write the words using invented spelling and generate more words that begin with the chosen sound.
Whole Class Activity: I enlarge the circle map and let the students generate words that begin with the sound that we are studying while I draw them on the circle map. At Center Time, students are encouraged to draw new items on the class circle map and write the words for each item using invented spelling.
