Learning phonemic awareness is important to building a strong foundation for early reading success. Students who have strong phonemic awareness are more likely to be successful readers and are less likely to struggle with spelling and decoding words. Instruction in phonemic awareness reduces and alleviates reading and spelling difficulties (Adams, Foorman, Lundberg, & Beeler, 1998; Gillon, 2004; NICHD, 2000; Rath, 2001). The critical relationship between phonological awareness and learning to read any alphabetic writing system (as well as foreign languages) has been scientifically proven ((Ehri, 2004; Rath, 2001; Troia, 2004).
Mix and match various beginning sounds to create 100% individualized books for your learners! If you are targeting specific sounds, just print off the necessary pages, laminate, add velcro, mix them up and put a binder ring on! Make learning fun today with these hands-on, interactive books!

How do I use these books?
Each page has a picture on it. For example, one of the letter F sound pages has a frog on it. Below each picture is a Velcro-ready box. Your students will say what the picture is out loud ("frog"), pick out the beginning sound ("f"), decide what letter makes that sound ("the letter F makes that sound"), and find the correct letter icon and stick it onto the box.
How do I set up these books?
Simply cut, laminate, hole punch, put on binder rings (or paper clips if you are in a pinch) and Velcro and your students can begin learning and practicing their beginning sounds. I purchase the Velcro and binder rings on bulk on Amazon for fairly cheap. The boxes on each page are made to accommodate circle or square Velcro pieces.
*Print in black and white for each student to color and make their own book.
*Instead of Velcro, just have students write in the letters with dry erase markers
*Place book pages (or print pages out as “handouts”) on a cookie sheet and have students use magnetic letters.
For durable books you make once and use forever, you will need::
(1) A printer
(2) Laminator (for durability)
(3) Hole punch
(4) Binder rings (or large paper clips)
(5) Velcro (or dry erase markers/magnetic letters)
