Are you looking for a new idea that asks students to begin the year thinking about the future? This activity is academically important, personally meaningful, and loads of fun. It's a more sophisticated time capsule.

Students are asked to write a friendly letter to their future self. This item includes:

All parts of a friendly letter - both labeled and defined
A five paragraph format
Paragraphing guidelines
Paragraph contents - including questions addressing a description of their present self, school, a special friend, social and academic goals, and future hopes and dreams
The ABC list of character traits
A quote by Confucius
A final draft writing template (a rough draft is optional)
An illustration page with directions for completion

The letters students write allow you an immediate understanding of writing skills, interests, social and academic strengths/ weaknesses, and future dreams.

The letter forces students to think about how the present impacts the future. Students write the letter at the start of the school year and it is returned to them at the end of the school year. Students love to see how they've changed and grown. Expect lots of giggles.
