Thank you for taking a look at this product! If you are looking for specific, thorough, aligned, & organized assessment of the Mathematics Common Core State Standards for 2nd grade, these materials are just what you need! The product is great for "end of the year" 2nd grade assessment, but is also extremely useful to third grade teachers at the beginning of the year checking to see which 2nd grade standards need review, or even reteaching, before tackling the 3rd grade CCSS.
This assessment tool is a comprehensive method by which to check your second grade students’ mastery of the Math CCSS. Because I wanted to make it “manageable” & developmentally appropriate, the assessment is relatively short (considering it’s covering an entire year’s worth of standards). However, the content is challenging, and so if your students are able to answer the questions correctly and strategically, they have most likely mastered simpler concepts within the same strand. For instance, if the student can correctly sequence ___, _____, 201, 202, _____, it stands to reason that he or she is able to sequence (not in the assessment) 566, ____, 568, 569.
This assessment includes:
An overview/introduction that explains some of
the rationale behind the way I chose to present content
4 “Notes” pages (one for each major strand) addressing challenging content & vocabulary, as well as listing a couple of standards that are not addressed in this material (not many) with an explanation of why they are not included
14 pages of assessment activities and questions:
- Operations and Algebraic thinking-2 pages/12 items
- Addition 1-9 math fact test-2 pages (based on CCSS expectations)
- Numbers & Operations in Base Ten-2 pages/12 items
- Measurement & Data- 7 pages/18 items + measuring "tools”
(8 inch ruler and 10 centimeter ruler to cut out and use if authentic classroom materials are not available)
- Geometry-1 page/14 items
An Answer Key for all items, with the exception of those items that have more than one correct answer
I used authentic math vocabulary (such as “equation”, “decomposition”, and “partition”) in this product since these are the words that the CCSS encourages students to use, so the reading level may be difficult for some students. Please check the reading level to determine whether your students would benefit from listening to the teacher read aloud the material.
In general, I suggest taking a look at the types of questions asked prior to giving this to your students, and if you spot language or formatting that you anticipate will be difficult for your class, do some practice with similar questions for a couple days first.
My goal for designing this assessment was to create a product that accurately measures mastery of the Math Common Core State Standards without creating TOO MUCH of a time-consuming test. I hope this product fits your needs and helps you with the assessment of your class!
