PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This helpful product includes 6 one page assessments. All 6 have pictures/clipart to represent the sounds being checked.
Beginning Consonants- There are 2 versions, each with 20 boxes (5 vowels and "x" not included) with a familiar (hopefully!) picture. The first version is multiple choice-3 consonants are printed under the picture and the student is to circle the consonant that is the beginning sound of the object in the picture. The second version requires a bit more emergent literacy skill. The same pictures are given with a writing lines below in which the student is to write the beginning consonant with no visual cues on the page. The same two "versions"/formats are used for an ending consonant assessment with all consonants represented with the exception of c,h,q,y, and z. Finally, there are two versions to assess vowel sound recognition. Each of these includes the 5 short vowel sounds and the 5 long vowel sounds. with one additional short i picture and one additional short e picture. (These are the two short vowel sounds with which students seem to have the most difficulty learning.
Please note that these assessments measure the students ability to match letters with their common sounds, not always with correct spelling, so there are a couple of examples in which the correct sound circled would actually be the "incorrect" spelling. (for instance, there is a picture of a sheriff's "badge" and the correct letter sound to circle is "j".
These assessments were designed to be used as a quick and simple means by which to get a 'general" feel for your students' phonics skills in order to begin guided reading grouping, etc. The assessments are definitely not long or detailed enough to give you a specific reading or spelling level, but I have found them useful at the beginning of the year. I hope you find them helpful as well!
I did not create a preview for this product since there are basically 2 types of worksheets (circle the consonant and write the consonant) for beginning, middle, and ending sounds. If you are unable to get an adequate look by viewing the thumbnails, please contact me and I'll put together a preview for a more detailed view.
Thanks for taking a look at my store. Please leave feedback if possible-I truly value the opinions of my colleagues as I continue to create instructional material.
Thank you to Mycutegraphics.com for the adorable clipart on the cover of this product!
