These writing prompts are designed to be used at the beginning of the year and the end of the year. I give my students the “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” writing prompt the first week of school. I haven’t taught them the steps to the writing process yet, so their writing is very weak and underdeveloped. However, in May (or June if you are one of the unfortunate people who has to teach well into June) your students have had tons of exposure to the writing process. They’ve learned how to adequately brainstorm, develop a great hook, focus on a main idea or topic, add details and use vibrant word choice, and then wrap up their writing with a dynamic ending. That’s where the second writing prompt comes into play. I give my students the “How I’ll Spend My Summer Vacation” prompt. Students will again develop this narrative with no assistance from me.
I use a long sheet of construction paper to display both sets of writing. I’ll make a label for the one from August and a label for the one from May. It is so rewarding to prove to your students just how far they have come as writers!
