This is a goal-setting activity that is great for the beginning of the year. The goal-setting is based on the inspirational "We choose to go to the moon" speech given by John F. Kennedy. Here are links to two different versions of the speech. I like to start by showing the video clip to my students.
The goal-setting activity is two-pages long. The first page focuses on the initial goal-setting done at the beginning of the year. The second page is meant for students to track their progress on their goal during each quarter of the school year.
The goal-setting asks students to choose a first step for the goal that they can accomplish now. It also asks how the teacher could help them accomplish their goal.
This resource contains a color or black-and-white version of this activity, as well as a Google digital version if you prefer.
