This beginning of the year activity is a lot of fun because the students can make personal connections with the ten elementary student characters portrayed in this mini-mystery . All of the children dropped their open backpacks in their excitement to greet friends on the first day of school, and the backpacks and supplies ended up in a big messy pile. it is your students' job as detectives to figure out which back pack and which small group of supplies belongs to each student.
This packet includes:
-one page with 10 color pictures of different backpacks & 10 color pictures of 2-4 school supplies grouped together (i.e. a glue bottle, a purple notebook, and an eraser)
- three pages that include a clipart picture of a named student and a paragraph giving clues that will have your students practicing making inferences and drawing conclusions as they have fun solving the mysteries. The right hand side of the page has spaces for gluing the correct pictures.
The clues are not especially difficult, as we all want our students to experience success while we're establishing a positive classroom community. Example: (for a student who has tape as a supply)-"Matthew gets very messy with glue, so he and his mom bought another supply that will stick 2 things together nice and neatly."
This could be set up as a center if you wish, although it might be more effective if everyone was solving the mysteries at the same time or with a partner and/or group, so I didn't include a recording sheet as it is designed to be a "cut and glue" activity. Although this product runs well in grayscale, unfortunately many of the clues involve color words (it was hard to describe backpacks without colors!) so you can either have students work together with a few color copies or have them add color words with a pencil or color in the backpacks according to your directions where necessary if it would help.
As always, please leave feedback or please let me know prior to leaving feedback if there is any part of this product that you would like to be corrected or revised and I will do my best to correct the problem. Creating useful products that enhance instruction is very important to me as I continue to design new material. Thanks for your interest and have a wonderful start to your school year!
