This is a written exam for a unit that covers early America to 1861. It touches on big themes from that time period. Writing exams allow students to practice their writing skills and prepares them well for college, but may be more difficult for some students. This can be scaffolded as necessary or can simply be used to work on writing skills and as a supplement to more traditional tests. It is designed so that it can be printed and the rest of the page can be used for answers, or it can be printed as two sheets per page to make half-sheet tests that can be reused. A rough answer key may be provided upon request, but as this is a written test, answers may vary by student and by what is specifically discussed in your classroom throughout a unit.
