Description
Are you hoping to teach kids to truly monitor and adjust their own behavior? Have you used systems that leave kids giving up by mid-week? Not only will this Class Behavior System with Guided Goal Setting solve those problems, but it will keep your model students pushing themselves too! The guided goal setting helps reinforce to students that we are all working on something and that we do better when we support each other!
In this file you will find individual behavior charts for each student. In my classroom, students staple a new chart sheet to their agenda every Monday morning. I have included four samples that are customizable, based on the behaviors you are most interested in fostering in your classroom. This is a system that encourages students to take responsibility for their own actions. There is a quarterly self-assessment included that prompts students to reflect on their data throughout the quarter and set a goal for themselves going forward. I have used this quarterly, and also bi-monthly, depending on the class. In my classroom, when a student is struggling to meet an expectation, I quietly approach them and ask, "Which expectation are you struggling with right now?" Since this is such a respectful interaction, and students know this is all about them I get responses like, "I'm not on task." The student will use their pen to record a #2 (depending on the behavior) on Monday (if it's Monday). I usually ask, "is there anything I can do to help?" Students know this is a time to decide if they need to slide their desk into a more private location, ask me to help them get started on a challenging task etc. On Thursday nights these go home for a parent signature and students file them in their files on Friday. We don't typically lose many because on Friday, anyone who got their chart signed is eligible for "Earned Time." A student pulls a criteria card out of a hat like, "I recorded fewer than 5 numbers all week" or "I recorded no numbers on Tuesday" or "I recorded no 5s this week." I tweak the criteria hat to reflect my focus for the week. The students think it's completely random.
