Have you ever been at your wit’s end because of ongoing interrupting behavior in the classroom? As we all know, it takes only a few “behavior problems” to make it miserable, unfair, and disruptive to all who deserve an on-going learning environment. Quite a few years back, I had a class which was out of control—even with countless interventions. Thus, I invented the BEHAVIOR CHECK SYSTEM! Literally, this miraculous system helped transfer my room into one smoothly run learning machine. I’ve used the system ever since and am now offering it to you.
The system has high, but easily monitored, expectations, which need to be adhered to by all your students. When broken, teacher simply gives a W to student culprit. Again, during the same time period, warrants a Check. Another one, and out the door. All monitoring is easily recorded on a “student-rostered” chart on a clipboard kept by teacher at all times. Parents may see it at anytime, and they get a most clear view how many times their darling child interrupts during a time period.
If instructor is consistent, over a short amount time, little checking will have to be done—speaking from this teacher who has had some pretty “rough” classes over the years. Overall, 90% of my students loved the system—based on several hundred surveys done.
If this very structured (but oh so much more time to have fun with your class too) system appeals to you, please find all the components below you’ll need to enforce the system.
1. Easy, three-step process explained thoroughly
2. Role playing directions
3. My personal history with this teacher-sanity life-preserver
4. Clear and vivid classroom poster explaining system
5. Wonderful charting examples and interpretation to use with
6. One-to-two week charts ready for checking
7. Parent letter regarding
8. Page supporting system (if ever needed for “buy-in”)
Have a great upcoming year, and enjoy, because this system will allow you to do so much more!
Until next time, MJ
PS "Behavior Check System," by Melissa J. Donovan, was originally in "The Systematized Classroom," but I just removed it, because I didn’t think all teachers would use it. (Well, I also wanted to cut down on its page length and price too—soon!)
