When you find yourself struggling to work with a child who exhibits challenging behaviors, you can use this Competing Pathways template to create a 'road map' to get them to move from exhibiting undesired behaviors to preferred behaviors. When filled out by all people involved in working with that child, and really focusing on what happens right before and right after the behavior, it is possible to put something ELSE in place of the undesired behavior so they become unable to exhibit that behavior. Two opposite behaviors cannot occur at the same time. A child cannot run while they are walking. Using this simple template can help guide all stakeholders in how to shape a preferred behavior and reduce or eliminate an inappropriate behavior.
