This behavior contract provides positively stated, easily observable behaviors for students who struggle with rules. Utilizing a contract with a student operationally defines what a teacher is looking for in classes, and can help them focus in on areas of behavior that may have been difficult for them to master.
This contract would be appropriate for upper elementary through high school age students. Depending on the student, I may shorten the contract to two or three target behaviors (as seen on Page 3) to avoid frustration from the student.
I give a point value for each behavior at the end of each period. Students can earn 0-3 points for each behavior per class. The point scale is detailed below.
3 points - Behavior was displayed 100% - 75% of the time
2 points - Behavior was displayed 74% - 50% of the time
1 point - Behavior was displayed 49% - 25% of the time
0 points - Behavior was displayed 25% - 0% of the time
One of the most important things is finding a reward the student will work for! For many of my middle school age students, they work to skip an assignment once they achieve at least 80% of their points 3 days in a row. I figure that if they are showing these positive behaviors (which usually correlates to how much attention they pay in class!), they have earned a little free time to themselves! While this works for most of my students, it is vital that YOU FIND WHAT YOUR STUDENTS WILL WORK FOR!
