Challenging behavior may require a functional behavioral assessment (FBA). Understanding the application of FBA is complex. This is a second in a series of Special Education Briefings. This briefing provides guidance to regular and special education teachers, administrators, counselors, school psychologists, and parents on how to manage challenging behaviors. In this briefing, the interplay of behavior and the function of the behavior is examined. Antecedent, behaviors, consequences are defined. The concept of how consequences can predict future behavior is discussed. A simple schematic is offered to support discussions with colleagues and parents regarding the process of completing a functional behavioral assessment - FBA.
