Students love to receive smiles for appropriate behavior--and play a game while doing it. Color in a smile for behaviors you want to encourage in your students. Color a frown when a student displays behaviors you want to discourage. When students receive 5 smiles, they move their token on the game board to the next numbered circle. If they get 5 frowns, they move their token back a space.
Before beginning the game, identify for the student what he will receive a smile for and what he will receive a frown for. Look closely for the positive behaviors and reward the student for them often. If your student gets upset for getting frowns, when you see the inappropriate behaviors, rather than giving him a frown, say, "I hope you'll make a better decision so I can give you a smile." The goal is to bring out the best behaviors, not to punish the worst ones.
Game board can be reset each day and students can try to get farther than the day before. Or they can keep working toward number 11 and see how many days it takes to get there.
Easily made into a file folder game. Laminate the pieces on a file folder. Use a highlighter to color smiles and frowns. Wipe off to reset the game. Add a piece of Velcro to each circle and on the bottom of a token or cut out circle to move around game board.
Packet includes a collection sheet for smiles and frowns and 4 game board variations, 2 color; 2 black & white
