Help for YOU at the start of class!

Make an organized transition from one class to the next (especially if you teach different classes requiring different lessons, materials, technology, etc.)

Engage students with a purposeful activity while you take care of teacher tasks: attendance, helping a student who was absent the day before, etc.)

Give your students the writing practice they need in a small bite and have a formative grade for your grade book every single day.

Super Easy to Use (and NO PREP!)

  1. Project one PowerPoint slide.
  2. Ask students to put the date and the abbreviated prompt title from the Checklist Page at the top of their paper, Google Doc, etc. They pair perfectly with my Bell Ringer Journal Pages.
  3. Add an optional task: Use a vocabulary word or at least one semicolon in your response, for example.
  4. Set your timer for 5-7 minutes.
  5. Optional sharing: turn and talk, whole class, shoulder partner, etc.
  6. Grading Timesaver: Circulate as your students work and rubber stamp or check mark if they are on track. There's no need to wait for them to completely finish and hand in their responses. No work to take home and grade later!

  • may be displayed (smart board, screen) or printed out to create a Bell Ringer Response Journal.
  • can be used year after year!
  • support CCSS Speaking and Listening Standards 9-10.1 and 11-12.1.
