Product Description
This resource is one way to do bell work that will expose students to different writing prompts in the form of journaling and get them to write!. Give this handout out at the beginning of a nine week and have students select one prompt from the week's options each day. I also included a word web graphic organizer if you choose to differentiate the assignment. The idea is to get students to write their thoughts down quickly in response to a prompt. I give them 10 minutes to do this.

Since I have noticed that many of my students freeze up when it comes to writing, this is a great way to get them to just write. It also exposes students to different types of writing prompts that they may encounter on district or state tests. I have my students write their responses on lined notebook paper, but you could also have them write in a journal notebook.

Differentiation: Those students who are IEP/ESL and really low ability- I ask them to brainstorm ideas about the writing prompt. They can make a list or create a word web. I let them continue to work on and develop the same prompt throughout the week. Average and high-ability students can be pushed to respond to a different prompt each day. On Friday, you might suggest they go back and elaborate on one of their choosing and develop it into an essay.

Other ways to use this handout:
* Group writing
* Peer work/editing work after initial free write
* Student choice of favorite topic to convert into an essay
* Formative Assessment of writing
* Homework
