Ben Carson is not the exception but an excellent example of how students can no longer use excuses to not be successful!
After a short unit on Harlem Renaissance literature, I allow my students to hear the awesome voices of modern day African American inspirational individuals such as Ben Carson!
I share with students Ben Carson’s background so they can fully understand why so many people are fascinated with him.
Therefore, before the lesson, it is much more effective if students view the video, “Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story” starring Cuba Gooding Jr.
This lesson is based on Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson’s speech at the National Prayer Breakfast.
Ben Carson’s speech immediately became famous as he addressed social and fiscal issues in front of President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Ben Carson proves to be intelligent, sincere, and shares the same values and vision for our youth and country as many Harlem Renaissance writers.
The url is provided on the Power Point for the YouTube video of Carson’s speech.
After students watch his speech online, they will participate in group work to analyze and discuss the ideas and issues expressed in the overall speech.
A class discussion will help students to also understand how problems in this country have evolved yet still fought for by many inspirational individuals thereby emulating the desires and dreams of Harlem Renaissance writers.
