I came upon this song while looking for activities for my students to sing for Black History Month. My 5th graders liked it enough that they requested to sing this for their continuation. A simple Google search will come up with a lot of extension activities for this song other than just learning it.
I completed two activities with my 5th graders with this song. The first was a version of this worksheet I found on Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/390687336409029293/). The second was more challenging for my students: I had them add a verse to the song in the same style of Ben Harper. My more advanced students did really well with this but my other students needed a lot of guidance in completing a verse but on the whole, it came out really well.
There are also two versions of this song, the first being Harper's original recording which is a bit faster and not as easy to sing along with. I used a recording of Ben Harper with Jack Johnson (https://play.google.com/music/listen?hl=en#/album//Jack+Johnson/Sing-A-Longs+%26+Lullabies+For+The+Film+Curious+George) that my students really loved.
Same as my other sing-alongs, this PowerPoint is animated for students to sing along with. Please let me know if you run into any issues with the animation or formatting.
