Hello, my teacher friends! I am one of the many teachers using the new Benchmark Advance program. I am very excited, although a bit overwhelmed, about teaching with such a full, well-balanced literacy program, and I love that it offers so many rich and rigorous learning opportunities for our students. However, as I started using the program, I found myself wishing for some student pages to accompany each lesson that would:
1. Display the “Purpose for Reading” and “Annotation Instructions”
2. Contain a more user-friendly version of the charts and graphic organizers
3. Explicitly state the student directions for the “Reread and Write to Apply
Understanding” task and give a place for the students to write their responses.
4. Display the Writing to Sources writing prompt (both the model and the real one) on the same page with the planning tools and charts.
So, in a sincere effort to make this amazing new program work for all our students, I have created some resources that may help you teach your whole group lessons in a more efficient and more effective manner. These "Companion Pages" support the whole group instruction component of Benchmark Advance by giving the students (and the teacher) explicit directions and workspace for practicing the skills in the following lesson components:
Model and Guided Practice, Reread and Write to Apply Understanding
*Writing to Sources:
Modeled Writing, Independent Practice, Exemplar Writing
* Word study:
Phonics & Spelling-Guided Practice, Productive Engagement
