This Google Slides Activity includes 22 unique slides that involve using benchmarks to create fractions that are similar in value, then identifying equivalent fractions to match area models.
The students will start first by adding a numerator to a fraction to make the fraction close to zero, close to one, or smaller than/greater than one-half. Then they will place their fraction on a number line where it (approximately) belongs. Then, they are given 10 different area models and they are asked to find a total of 4 equivalent fractions to match that area model, and from those 4, they must choose the most simplified version of the fraction.
The slides are very easy to duplicate if you would like to add more than the 22 that are included. Extra fractions are provided on the final slide should you want to create more area model slides by duplicating a slide and changing the shaded portion.
I have used this activity in my 6th grade classroom as review prior to working with dividing fractions, and all abilities of students enjoyed the challenge. I feel that this activity could also work well in 4th/5th grade, and possibly even 7th grade as review.
There is no prep required other than saving the activity to your Google Drive and assigning it via Google Classroom or providing your students with a link to the activity.
