Product Description
This informative writing activity focuses on three inventions developed by Benjamin Franklin. Students will write about the Franklin stove, bifocals, and lightning rode.
Mini posters and pocket chart vocabulary cards of the inventions are included to introduce the inventions and then refer to later as a reference. Using “Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then” phrases, students will fill in a chart to identify the problems people had and the inventions that Ben Franklin created to solve them. An answer key is provided if you don't have books/text to refer to. The writing process will focus on students using an opening sentence stating the topic. Then they will provide details and also provide a closing sentence. This will be done for each of the three inventions (and for additional writing practice).

Put these writings all together to create a folding accordion book or a long poster created with construction paper. Instructions and photos are included.

Inventors see a problem and are inspired to create something to solve that problem for people. This resource emphasizes engineering design that NGSS focuses on for K-2. Their goal is for students to ask questions, make observations, and gather information. This writing activity uses these steps while also developing your students' skills in writing informative/explanatory texts. This is a great beginning activity for students to be problem solvers and develop their own inventions.

Extend this even more by using an additional writing paper that is included if you choose to do additional research and write a biography about Ben Franklin.
