This is a boast activity that students can complete individually or in pairs. It requires them to emulate the Anglo-Saxon boasts observed in Beowulf. They must reflect back on their accomplishments, look ahead to future challenges, and base their work on the style of boasting found in the text.
⤖This unique product includes:
⤖Brainstorming/Planning Directions: Students plan for the assignment by listing their previous school-related accomplishments (grades, clubs, awards, etc.). Then, just as Beowulf did in the text, students list upcoming challenges. Whereas Beowulf had a fight with Grendel, older students face final exams, graduation, college applications, etc.
⤖Requirements for drafting: after students brainstorm and list past accomplishments and upcoming challenges, they draft their boast. The document specifies requirements such as number of lines, required use of alliteration, caesura, kennings, hyperbole, and other devices that emulate the Anglo-Saxon boasts of old.
⤖This is also a great public speaking assignment, as I always require my students to present their boasts to the class. Lastly, I have also found that having students recall and organize their past achievements is a great way to introduce resume writing.
