Facilitate class discussion and help students make relevant text-to-self and text-to-world connections with these Beowulf Journal Prompts!
Included in the ZIP file are 3 versions of the Journal: PPT, PDF (to project), and PDF (with lines for writing).
There are 7 prompts to use throughout your study of Beowulf, focusing on universal concepts like fame, friendship, tradition, monsters, evil, revenge, and fate. Each prompt connects the topic to Anglo-Saxon culture and asks more specific questions to get kids thinking and writing about their own lives and the world around.
Tips for Use:
• Have students complete the journals either before or after reading the portion of the epic that the journal pertains to.
• Have students bring in short, school-appropriate youtube or video clips that relate to their topics for extra credit/discussion.
• If you are low on time, give students all of the prompts, and let them choose 2 or 3 to respond to.
• Have a class discussion where students share their entries and ideas. You could do this after each journal, or have the discussion once all are completed.
I hope this activity can save you some time, allow students to make relevant connections, and provide opportunity for exciting class discussion!
