This package covers 5-7 days of material to accompany reading Beowulf (full or abridged). Create an Anglo-Saxon Newspaper. This is both an individual and group writing assignment that can be differentiated between Honors/AP/Regular classes and includes student examples. Students must write analytical essays (religious, historical, psychological or textual analysis) and create Anglo-Saxon ads, obituaries, etc., based on the setting and characters from the poem.
Additional slides include reading questions over John Gardener’s Grendel (chapter 6) for a comparative analysis (questions and text included). Reading questions over two academic essays, “The Structural Unity of Beowulf: The Problem of Grendel's Mother,” by Jane Nitzsche (Chance) and “Why Read Beowulf?” by Robert Yeager.
