Elizabeth "Bessie" Coleman was an American civil aviator. She was the first female pilot of African American descent. She gained her license two years before Amelia Earhart. Unable to train to be a pilot in the USA as a black woman, she learned French and gained her license from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
